The LightWave 3D Group has made several exciting announcements at SIGGRAPH today, including introducing the new features in LightWave 11.6, the latest update of its award winning 3D modelling, animation, and rendering software. They have also unveiled NevronMotion, a new motion capture retargeting plugin for LightWave 11.6 that supports the Microsoft Kinect camera; allowing users to quickly and easily capture, adjust, and retarget motion data to 3D models inside LightWave using Kinect.

The new features of LightWave 11.6 include the Genoma character rigging system with modular presets and predator and prey Flocking capabilities, a Spline Control Tool giving artists the ability to control or deform tentacles, tails, or even elevators, and new import and export options to support output to 3D Printers as well as geometry clean up tools specifically for 3D Printing output. Other enhancements include the ability to view assets within LightWave OpenGL exactly as they would appear in the final real-time display engine as well as the ability to visualize advanced stereoscopic 3D environments across multiple devices.

NevronMotion, the new motion capture retargeting plugin for Lightwave 11.6, will allow artists to capture live rig motion with the Microsoft Kinect camera and retarget the motion in LightWave, then easily adjust arm and leg mocap positions as well as layer hand-keyed animation on top of the motion capture files.

“Working with motion capture files in LightWave is now extremely easy with the new tools in NevronMotion. Not only can artists quickly retarget a motion capture skeleton on LightWave characters, but they can create presets for retargeting to speed up working with custom motion capture libraries,” said Rob Powers, president of the LightWave 3D Group. “And when paired with the Kinect Camera, the real-time performance and motion capture capabilities of NevronMotion make it a real game changer.”

LightWave 11.6 is priced at $1495 discounted to $1295 for a SIGGRAPH show special; with NevronMotion priced at $299, also currently discounted to $199 for SIGGRAPH. Both are expected to ship later this year.
