In issue 68 of 3D Artist we partnered once again with Aldo Vicente, the artist behind the awesome Shelby Cobra image adorning the cover of issue 64. This issue he goes into further detail on his workflow for realistic metallic surfaces using Maya and mental ray.

If you’re new to the world of texturing then make sure you check out our beginner’s guide, featuring a breakdown of the various maps that comprise a single texture. Be sure to check the disc too – we’ve partnered with the awesome 3DTotal.com to provide you with a whopping 50 textures with their various maps included!

For those of you with a bit of MARI experience under your belt, there’s an in-depth tutorial on professional texturing from MPC texture artist Daniele Orsetti. Within he reveals the processes he uses day to day when working on some of the world’s biggest blockbusters!

Hard-surface expert Mike Jagodzinski also got involved this issue, revealing how you can use the new tools in MODO and MARI to create a videogame-ready helicopter asset. Be sure to pop in the disc for a wealth of accompanying tutorial files!

We also sat down with five junior artists who have just broken into the big, wide world of visual effects. In our One Year On feature we talk to these newcomers about their education, the experiences so far, and what advice they have to offer to those currently looking to find a place in the industry.

If you’re looking for employment in the industry, then heading into previsualisation is certainly recommended! This issue The Third Floor reveals just how in-depth the process has become, discussing how it’s now used for everything from choreographing shots to determining what technology and shooting set-ups might be needed on set.

There’s plenty of other tutorial content to be found throughout the issue. Jahirul Amin continues his cuttlefish series, this time texturing his creature in Maya and Mudbox. Eric Rosenthal, meanwhile, reveals how artists can create a Back to the Future style fire trail behind the wheels of their animated vehicles.

As ever, there’s plenty of art and inspiration to be found throughout the magazine too, such as this piece from Kimmo Kaunela. Just looking at this makes us want to stick Alien in the DVD player!

If you buy 3D Artist issue 68 today, you’ll also get access to all of this exciting content. Please note that digital purchasers are currently only able to gain access to the magazine tutorial files.
