This issue Kojima Productions senior concept artist Gavriil Afanasyev Klimov supplied this amazingly detailed robot design for the cover, created using MODO. We wanted to learn more about the craft of concept design in 3D, so we sat down with Gavriil for an in-depth discussion on his career thus far and the shape of the industry today.
We also asked Gavriil to reveal his concept design workflow, so he supplied a step by step tutorial detailing his practices when designing the sci-fir weapons and technology we see in the films and videogames of today. It’s not to be missed!
We’re big fans of the work that’s coming out of MPC recently. You can barely watch a film without seeing its work, from Prometheus through to The Lone Ranger. As such, we were excited indeed to get a behind-closed-doors glimpse at the work that goes on at the feature film division of the studio. Be sure to check out this in-depth article, in which we detail the MPC pipeline and talk to the heads of each department.
Not content to stop there, we also asked MPC to give us a practical example of the work that they do. Lead technical animator at MPC, Mathiew Assemat, jumped at the challenge, revealing in his in-depth step by step guide how the studio creates believe cloth simulations using nCloth.
Finally, we also went behind the scenes to take a look at the work both MPC and Cinesite did on the visual effects laden World War Z. One of the most ambitious zombie flicks of all time, this is one feature that’s not to be missed!
Having been impressed by Marcello Baldari’s work in the past, we also asked if he would be willing to impart his innovative Polysketch technique to our readers. He did so in this top-notch ZBrush tutorial, which should have you creating incredibly unique sculpts in no time.
Given that they’re currently in the process of changing the world, we thought that it would be a good idea to turn our attention the world of 3D printing. In the mag this issue you will find a 3D printing group test, with four of the top, affordable desktop 3D printers pit against one another.
